Every March the live oaks over Spring Valley Village let go all at once, and the curbs, the walks and the flower beds fill with a yellow-green drift of catkins and old leaves. Erick lawns spends that season with the blower and rake as much as the mower — clearing walks and driveways, hauling the yard debris off so new St. Augustine can find sun. The rest of the year is the steady part: cutting, edging along drives and sidewalks, trimming what the deck cannot reach. Bermuda and St. Augustine both grow on these blocks, and each gets the height that suits it. There is a particular pleasure in a front walk swept until the concrete looks new again.
