The Grass Squad

About The Grass Squad

By two o'clock on an August afternoon the thunderheads are already stacking over Galveston Bay, white and enormous, and everybody in Seabrook works with one eye on them. The Grass Squad gets the Monday route finished ahead of the rain: mow, edge, trim, blow, move on. Coastal St. Augustine puts on an inch after every storm, so the schedule never really slackens between May and October. There is a rhythm to a route done right — the same yards in the same order, each one left with the same clean finish. Then the rain comes down hard for twenty minutes and the whole town smells like wet grass and salt.
