The Texas Outfielders

About The Texas Outfielders

Late spring on the Llano Estacado, the playa lakes west of Rockwell Place fill up after a storm and the whole flat country smells briefly like rain and wet grama. The Texas Outfielders take the field in that weather — mowing, edging, trimming, weed control and cleanups across yards and open lots where the ground runs level for miles. Grass gets its one great growing spell here between the thunderstorms and the heat, and using it well is most of the job. Nothing dresses a Panhandle property like a lawn cut straight and edged tight against a walk, with all that sky above it. When the clouds pile up in the west and the light turns green-gold, a finished yard looks like it belongs there.
