In Richland Hills the July heat gets up early, so the mower gets up earlier. 2 Teachers & a Mower works the grid of low brick streets between Loop 820 and the freeway while the grass still holds its dew — cutting, edging clean along the walks, running the trimmer around mailbox posts and fence corners, then blowing every last clipping off the concrete. By the time the sun clears the rooftops the yard looks put away, the way a room looks when the chairs are pushed in. There is a plain, steady satisfaction in a lawn cut on time, week after week, through a Tarrant County summer that never quite lets go. Come November the bermuda turns gold and the work shifts to leaves and last cuts, and the truck comes back around all the same.
