Radar Base got its name from an old radar station that once watched the skies over Maverick County; the sky is still the biggest thing out here: wide, pale blue, and hot from mid-morning on. JCH Lawn Services works in this community just outside Eagle Pass, mowing and trimming where Bermuda grass and mesquite share the same sun-hardened ground. Healthy grass in brush country is a small, stubborn victory, and keeping it cut evenly helps it stay thick through the dry spells. They trim around fences and posts, edge along drives and rake away the clippings so a yard looks put together. In the brief cool of early morning, before the heat settles in, a newly mown lawn here looks like an act of welcome.
