Ozona is the only town in Crockett County, a square of live oaks and pecans set out on the Edwards Plateau with the Crockett monument standing in the middle of it. The country around it is limestone, juniper and mesquite, and rain comes rarely and all at once, running hard down Johnson Draw before the ground can take a drop of it. Borders Tree Services keeps the town's shade in shape — pruning the pecans in the yards and the oaks along the square, trimming what hangs low over a caliche drive, removing the trees a long dry spell has hollowed from the inside. After a hard blow off the plateau, the work is pulling limbs out of the yard and carrying them off, with nothing left waiting by the gate. Where shade has to be planted and defended, a well-kept tree is a small local landmark.
