Lawn Maintenance

About Lawn Maintenance

By two in the afternoon the Basin goes quiet the way an oven does, and the only things moving on the block are a mower and its own short shadow. Lawn Maintenance keeps Odessa yards on a rhythm — same day, same route, the grass never allowed to get ahead of itself — through the neighborhoods around Floyd Gwin Park and on out toward the west side. The work is mowing, edging the walks and drives, running the string trimmer down fence lines the blade can't follow, and then blowing every last blade back off the concrete. In this alkaline ground the reward for steady tending shows up fast: a lawn holding its color while the alley behind it is going tan. Nobody says thank you out loud for a clean fence line, but everybody notices one.
