About Alcove Care Inc

April on the South Plains arrives sideways: wind out of the southwest, a haze of caliche dust standing on the horizon, and every yard in Morton needing a comb-through. Alcove Care Inc mows and trims through it, cutting the grass short and even, edging the walks, and clearing the tumble of dried grass that collects along fences and the north side of every garage. Cochran County gives its lawns almost nothing — thin rain, hard sun, twenty miles of open cotton ground in any direction — so a green yard here is something a person builds on purpose. By evening the wind drops off the way it always does, and a freshly cut lawn under that enormous sky looks worth the trouble. That is the whole point of the work: a small ordered square in the middle of a very large flat world.
