A few times each winter a norther comes down the Valley and McAllen wakes at forty degrees with the sabal palms rattling like paper. Texas RGV Landscape works straight through it, because the grass here barely pauses — a cool month slows the Bermuda down, and February starts it right back up. Mowing, edging and trimming carry through the mild season, and the cleanups follow the fronts, when the wind has stripped the ebony and huisache and laid it all across the lawn. There is a plain pleasure in hauling that away and leaving a yard that looks rested instead of ragged. By the time the first warm week arrives, the weekly rounds are already running, ahead of the heat rather than chasing it.
