By late February the bar ditches along US-290 west of Manor go blue with bluebonnets, and the lawns behind them wake up a couple of weeks later, patchy and hungry. That first cut of the year is the one Texican JLS looks forward to — knocking down the winter growth, taking the dormant thatch back so the new green can come through even, and edging the walks so the yard has a border again. From there it settles into the rhythm of the season: mowing on schedule, trimming the fencerows and the ground around the trees, shaping the shrubs, sweeping the hard surfaces before the trailer gate goes up. Spring on this prairie moves in a hurry, and the route keeps pace with it. Come April the yards look like somebody decided how they ought to look.
