Southeast of town the pines run right down to the water at Lake Cherokee, and the yards out that way have to hold their own against pine straw, sandy ground and a great deal of shade. David's Outdoors keeps them in hand with mowing, edging, string trimming, seasonal cleanups and hauling off whatever the trees have let go. Fog sits on the water most mornings until the sun burns through around nine, and by then the first lawn of the day is already cut and blown clean. Working outdoors in East Texas means learning the year by heart — what surges in April, what stalls in August, what needs raking in November. The reward is a place that looks tended from the road and from the dock both.
