For a few weeks each spring the bluebonnets come up along the interstate shoulders, and every yard in town seems to want color of its own. Bed work grows naturally out of that: seasonal color planted, fresh bed lines cut, mulch laid dark enough to make the blooms jump off the ground. The lawn side keeps its steady beat all the while — mowing, edging, string trimming, shrub shaping and a clean sweep of the walks. Between the Flower Mound line and the middle of Lewisville, a yard that changes with the year feels lived in rather than installed. Watching a bed planted in March hit full stride in May is reason enough to keep doing it.
