Evening on Lake LBJ turns the water the color of a nickel, and the lawns that run down to it hold the last of the light. LBJ Gardens keeps those slopes in order — mowing and edging to the water's edge, trimming around dock posts and retaining walls, beds weeded and mulched, plantings tucked in where the lake wind allows. Since the lake stays at a constant level, the shoreline is a permanent line to work to, and meeting it exactly is its own kind of pride. Autumn means cutting back, raking and hauling; spring means the beds opened up again before the first busy weekend arrives. The route follows the shore through Kingsland, Sunrise Beach Village, Horseshoe Bay and Granite Shoals.
