Old Katy keeps its live oaks the way some towns keep their photographs — planted along the streets near the depot, wide-armed, holding shade over sidewalks laid back when the prairie still came right up to the edge of town. Living Trees & Shrubs works inside that green architecture: shaping hedges until a front walk opens up again, thinning a shrub bed so light can reach the soil, mowing and edging so the whole yard reads as one settled idea. February is the honest month here, when branches are bare enough to see the shape you are cutting toward and a norther off the plains makes the labor comfortable. By April the crape myrtles have leafed out, the beds are mulched dark, and every pruning cut has vanished into new growth. That is the pleasure of it — the good decisions in a yard are the ones nobody notices, only enjoys.
