Spring in this part of East Texas is a race — give a neglected corner six weeks of warm rain and it will grow back into thicket, briars and yaupon and pine seedlings all at once. Dyess Land Services meets that head on, mowing rough lots, cutting back brush along fencelines, and opening ground that had quietly closed itself off. Cherokee County ground is sandy and forgiving to work but generous to anything with roots, so the difference between a lot and a woodlot is one season of not showing up. There is a particular pleasure in standing at the road afterward and being able to see all the way across a piece of property again. From Jacksonville out toward Rusk, Alto and Wells, the work is measured in acres reclaimed rather than yards trimmed.
