East of town the two forks of the Trinity lean toward each other through the bottomland, and after a hard rain you can smell the river from a long way off — wet cottonwood, mud, cut grass going sweet. Rios Landscape works the day after weather like that, when the ground gives easily and everything green has grown three inches overnight. Mowing, edging and trimming come first; then the beds, the shrubs, and hauling off the load the storm and the mower made between them. Grass that has been catching water for two days cuts heavy and leaves a deep, saturated color behind it. Standing at the curb afterward, looking down a lawn that is even from one fence to the other, is the reason to do this work at all.
