Late in the afternoon the crepe myrtles along Ingleside streets throw long shadows, and the oleanders hold their color straight through the heat. Jack's Landscaping works around them — mowing and edging turf, trimming shrubs back to shape, cutting beds a defined border and carrying the trimmings out. Soil on this peninsula runs sandy and salt-touched, so plantings are given room and grass is left tall enough to shade its own roots. The final pass is always the walk and the drive, taken down to bare concrete. A yard that looks composed rather than merely mowed is the whole aim.
