Done Ripe Gardens

About Done Ripe Gardens

Late spring in Hutchins is loud with mockingbirds and heavy with the shade of old pecans, and everything green is in a hurry. Done Ripe Gardens works into that rush — mowing on a schedule the grass can't outrun, edging the beds back to a clean line, trimming the odd corners no mower will ever reach. A bed edge cut true is one of the plainest good-looking things there is; it makes a whole yard read as tended. The work is weekly, unglamorous and cumulative, and by June a property that gets it looks nothing like one that doesn't. That difference is the point.
