Sam Rayburn Reservoir lies just east of Huntington, wide enough that the wind coming off it can change an entire afternoon. Under that wind the lawns of Angelina County grow hard all summer, St. Augustine and centipede putting on inches between visits, wanting mowing, edging and trimming on a schedule that never slackens from May to October. Winter is short here and mostly still green, so the work turns toward cleanup, bed tidying and getting borders back where they belong. Huntington is a small town wrapped in pine, and every yard is a clearing somebody made and has to keep making. There is something steadying in that, the same green ground held to the same line all year long.
