Along Navigation, spring arrives loud — esperanza and lantana going off in the front yards of Magnolia Park, palm shadows on the sidewalk, the taquerias propping their doors open. Ventura Landscape works the East End and Second Ward, cutting and edging the small deep lots, shaping the shrubs, planting the beds that make a modest house on a corner look like a place somebody loves. Mulch goes down between the plants, the turf gets cut to a straight line at the walk, and the whole front settles into order. Old neighborhoods have old bones — a fig tree, a tile step, a fence that has been there longer than anybody asks about — and the landscaping should work with them, not over them. Getting that balance right in a yard on Harrisburg is as good as this trade gets.
