Don't Dread It

About Don't Dread It

Two weeks of Hempstead rain and a yard stops being a yard. Don't Dread It exists for exactly that afternoon — the mowing, the trimming, the edging, the full cleanup that turns a thicket back into grass. Nobody should have to feel sheepish about the state of the place, which is more or less the whole idea behind the name. Waller County heat makes yard work a matter of timing, so the work leans into the cooler end of the day and keeps going until it is done. The relief on somebody's face when the mower finally shuts off is a fine thing to be paid in.
