Every workday starts the same way: up over the causeway with the bay opening out on both sides, and then the island unrolling — port cranes to the north, seawall to the south, thirty miles of it end to end. Galveston Island Services runs that whole length, from the historic grid downtown to the stilt-house streets past the state park. Mowing, edging and trimming look simple from the road, but doing them well on a barrier island means reading sandy ground, salt air and grass that hardly ever quits growing. The crew works a route, leaves each yard cut even and blown clean, and moves on. By the time the light goes gold over West Bay, there is a line of finished lawns behind the truck.
