East of Floydada the tableland simply ends — the caprock breaks off into Blanco Canyon and the plains fall away in red rock and mesquite. Sunrise comes over that rim early and hard, and it is a good hour to start cutting grass. Caprock Irrigation works Floydada yards while the day is still cool: mowing, edging clean lines along the concrete, trimming out the corners a deck cannot reach, and blowing the walks so nothing is tracked inside. Summer up here is bright and dry and short on mercy, and grass that gets cut on schedule at the right height comes through it far better than grass that does not. Finishing a yard before the heat arrives is its own kind of victory.
