By November the sweetgums around East Mountain turn every color a leaf can manage, wine and gold and scarlet, and then let it all go, along with a scatter of spiky gumballs that anyone barefoot learns to respect. IandN service takes on that yearly fall of leaves, raking and blowing them off the lawn, trimming back what summer overgrew, and leaving the grass clear to breathe before the cold. The pines drop their needles on a schedule of their own and the oaks hang on to some leaves into December, so the cleanup comes around as many times as the trees ask. It is good, patient work, bag after bag, until the ground shows through again. Late-afternoon light falls amber through the bare limbs, and a yard picked clean of leaves and gumballs looks wider, calmer, ready for winter.
