Pecan Bayou runs slow past Early on its way to the Colorado, and by October the pecans start dropping, hulls and leaves and small branches scattered across every lawn from here toward Brownwood. Brasher & Co clears all of that off and cuts underneath it, mowing even through the dappled light of Brown County's live oaks and pecans. The routine is unglamorous and it works: everything raked off the turf first, then a level pass, then close trimming at the trunks and clean edges at the drive. Grass here holds its green well into fall before it finally lets go. A yard cleared and cut in autumn looks twice its size, which never stops being satisfying.
