Del Rio is a desert town with a secret: San Felipe Springs, welling up cool and clear out of the limestone and sending a creek right through town beneath tall pecans. Amistad Outdoor & Yard shares its name with the great blue reservoir upstream on the Rio Grande, and it does its mowing, edging and outdoor cleanup in the yards between that water and the dry brush. The sun here is up early and fierce by mid-morning, so the gentle first light belongs to the mower, while grass is still cool underfoot. Keeping a yard trim and green in this hard, bright country is a quiet kind of defiance. By the time heat is shimmering over Veterans Boulevard, the lawn is finished and the shade waits for whoever comes home to it.
