By July the heat sits down on Canyon Lake and refuses to move, so the good hour is the early one, before the cicadas wind all the way up in the oaks along FM 306. XP Landscape works that hour: Bermuda cut high enough to hold its color, edges run tight to the curb, trimmer line singing around mailbox posts and the base of every trunk. Out here a yard is a clearing carved from the cedar, which means the shape of it matters, exactly where the mowed line stops and the brush takes over. Clippings get blown back off the walk, the gate gets latched behind us, and by evening the shade swings around again and the place looks cool even when the thermometer disagrees. Week after week through a long Texas summer, that is the whole idea.
