Late in the day the wind swings around off East Bay and the whole peninsula smells like marsh grass and coming rain. That is H L & L's favorite hour to finish a yard: mower ticking as it cools, edges cut clean, the drive swept before the mosquitoes find anybody. Lawn care out here means salt spray, sand instead of soil, and a turf that runs sideways as fast as it climbs, so trimming around pilings and porch posts never really ends between Port Bolivar and Gilchrist. They keep after it — mowing on a rhythm, hedges shaped back, the lot held at the line where it wants to go wild. When the light turns orange over the bay and the place is squared away, the work reads as effortless, which is the whole point of it.
