Nolan Creek slides green under the downtown bridges, the courthouse square keeps its quiet, and out toward Belton Lake the Bermuda and St. Augustine come on fast enough to need a steady hand week after week. Mowing, edging, string trimming, then blowing the clippings clear of the walk, in that order every time, until there is a clean line where the turf meets the curb. The best part is the last pass: stripes laid straight, a crisp edge down the drive, cut grass hanging in air that has not started to shimmer yet. When autumn wind comes down off the Lampasas Cut Plain and the leaves stack against the fences, the crew is back for cleanups, carrying yards through a mild Central Texas winter. Work runs from Belton out to Temple, Salado, Nolanville, Morgan's Point Resort and Harker Heights.
