October along the Spicewood Springs ridge is the reward for having survived August — cool mornings, the escarpment air moving, and grass that finally wants to grow again instead of merely endure. Merola's Landscaping works those weeks hard: mowing back to a healthy height, edging the walks and the drives, cutting shrubs into shape, clearing the beds and refreshing the mulch before the short days come. Yards up on the Balcones break are half rock, half garden, and the good ones are built out of that fact rather than against it. Leaves and cuttings get hauled off, the stone blown clean. It's the season when a well-kept place around here looks like it was designed on purpose.
