By early April the shoulders of I-20 through Hudson Oaks fill in with bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush, and every homeowner in Parker County starts eyeing their own front yard with new suspicion. Beds get reshaped and mulched, shrubs come back to their intended outline, and grass that limped through the winter is mown and edged into something with posture. Much of the work is plain geometry: where the lawn stops, where the bed begins, how a walk ought to meet a drive. Hudson Oaks is a small place strung along a highway between the oaks and Weatherford, and a yard here is most of what people ever see of a house. Getting those lines right is the better half of the pleasure.
