About Texas Tough Gardens

August in Alamo Heights is loud — cicadas sawing in the treetops, condensers running all day, and a caliche-thin soil that asks a great deal of anything trying to grow in it. Texas Tough Gardens takes the name literally: beds and lawns tended for what actually endures here, cut back and cleared out on a rhythm the heat sets. Much of it is hands-and-knees work rather than mower work — weeding, bed edging, trimming, shaping, hauling off. Then September turns, the light softens over toward the Olmos Park side of the neighborhood, and everything that came through the summer starts back up. Watching a garden survive a Texas year and then run with it is a fine way to spend twelve months.
