Short Mountain stands a good thousand feet above the rest of Cannon County, and it collects weather the valley never sees — flakes that start at the top and work down the grade while Woodbury is still only wet. Short Mountain Land Service plows that country: the switchback drives, the long gravel runs to houses set back in the timber, the turnarounds that have to be wide enough for a truck to get itself back out. Ice control up there is its own study, knowing which north-facing bend keeps a slick until noon and treating it before anybody slides. By the time the sun finds the ridge the drives are open, the mailboxes are reachable, and the mountain feels like somewhere you can live all twelve months, which is rather the point. Cold, early, and finished — that is a good morning's work.
