Winter nights out along Saturn Parkway run wide and empty, the lots black and the tall lights making bright cones in the falling snow. M-L Utilities is out in that hour, pushing the pavement into long even windrows and salting the walks so first shift arrives on footing instead of glass. Middle Tennessee snow comes rarely enough to catch a place off guard and heavily enough, some years, to stop it outright. The point is that a Spring Hill morning starts on time anyway. When the sun finally comes up on bare asphalt, the night's work is invisible — and that is the entire idea.
