Along Old Taft Highway in April the dogwoods open white in the understory and the whole mountain looks briefly like it snowed at chest height. J&J lawn care starts the season about then — mowing yards from the first real flush of growth, keeping edges crisp where lawn meets asphalt, trimming close around mailbox, post and stone, and carrying off clippings along with winter's leftover leaves. It's small, steady work done to a schedule, week after week, from the first cut to the last. Nobody notices a lawn that stays neat, which is exactly the compliment. The truck moves on and the street looks a little better than it did an hour ago.
