The hollows south of Seymour are full of long gravel drives that climb harder than they look, and an inch of ice turns them into something nobody should attempt. Kelly Excavating brings weight to that problem — plowing, opening driveways and turnarounds, clearing walkways, and salting the grades where shade sits all day long. Foothill storms come on fast and leave quickly, so a drive opened in the first hours is a drive that stays open. There is a particular pleasure in cutting the first track up a steep lane and watching a truck come down it safely an hour later. The rest of the year the mountains keep their own weather, and the iron waits.
