Down in the Elk River bottoms south of Pulaski the fog comes up in the evening and, on the coldest nights of a Giles County winter, never quite leaves — it just settles onto everything and turns to rime. Fosters Land Services works those frozen mornings, plowing drives and lots and clearing walks while the fields are still glazed and the ground rings hard underfoot. River-bottom cold has a way of setting snow into something closer to concrete, so the work is deliberate: break it, move it, treat what is left. By full daylight the drive is dark and wet and the day can start. That is a fine thing to be able to do for a neighbor.
