Winter here arrives sideways: an ice event on a Tuesday, sixty degrees by Friday, then snow off the mountains at the end of the month. The measure of a night's work is an ordinary morning, streets open and the town going about its business without giving it a thought. The department clears the streets of Pigeon Forge itself, in the valley between Sevierville and Gatlinburg.
