Everything around here sits on a tilt. The ground in East Ridge leans downhill toward the flats with White Oak Mountain standing off across the way, and a driveway that drains fine in June becomes a problem in January when meltwater runs, stalls and turns to glass by four in the afternoon. Snow and ice work on ground like that is about where things go: plowing drives and lots, pushing piles to the high side so runoff does not cross the path people walk, shoveling walks and steps, salting the low spots twice. A midday sun can undo a whole morning if nobody thinks a half-step ahead, so the passes get planned before the blade ever drops. What that buys is a surface still walkable after dark, which is the part most people never notice.
