Miller and Sons, Inc.

About Miller and Sons, Inc.

Late on a winter afternoon the light over Oneida goes blue, the ridges flatten out, and you can watch the next band of snow cross the plateau before you feel it. Miller and Sons, Inc. is usually staged by then — trucks loaded, blades ready, lots picked in the order they'll be needed. Plowing runs through the dark and into the small hours, opening lots and driveways so whoever unlocks a door at six has somewhere to put a car. Ice gets its own attention: salt at the doorways, sand on the grades where Scott County gravel likes to freeze slick. Snow is a nuisance in most tellings, but there's real satisfaction in handing a town back its own pavement.
