The first true snow of December usually announces itself over the Big South Fork gorge, coming up out of the west while the hollows still hold their fog. Johnsons Development is out in it, running driveways and access roads around Oneida from the mailbox all the way in to the garage door. A plow route here is a lesson in grade — every drive has its own pitch, its own bad curve, its own bank where the wind loads a drift. Walkways get shoveled and treated so nobody has to guess at the last ten feet. It's plain work with a plain reward: a cleared lane, a truck that starts and goes.
