An East Tennessee July builds its thunder over the mountain all afternoon and lets go about four o'clock, and the grass answers by putting on another inch overnight. Southern Scapes keeps pace with it — mowing, trimming, edging, tidying the beds and borders so a front porch has something worth looking out at. Then the poplars go bare, the year turns hard, and the same trucks come back with plows and shovels and salt for drives, walks and parking areas. Snow does not visit this valley often, but when it does it means it, and a cleared path to the porch steps is worth more than it sounds. Two halves of one calendar, one place, start to finish.
