Snow lasts longest on the north face of Chestnut Ridge, where the winter sun never gets a full look at it, and that is where the last white patches hold on days after the valley has gone brown again. Working these slopes means knowing which driveways refreeze at dusk and which ones drain themselves by noon. When a storm comes over the Cumberlands, the plow goes up the hill streets first, then back down for the walkways and stair treads that shovels have to handle by hand. Ice gets treated where the grade is steepest, at the foot of the drive and the turn into the garage. There is a plain pride in seeing a whole cul-de-sac opened up while the woods on the ridge are still loaded and silent.
