About Perfect TN Lawns

The old cemesto houses that spread out from Jackson Square were set close and quick, and their yards are small, square and unforgiving — every mistake in a mow line shows from the street. That is a good place to learn to cut grass. Through a Tennessee June, when the fescue is up and the dogwoods have finished, the work is mowing on a steady rotation, trimming around every porch pier and clothesline post, and running an edge that gives the walkway its shape back. Late in the season it becomes leaf work, hauling the sweetgum and maple off the turf before the first hard rain glues it down. A lawn that looks cared for makes a whole block look cared for, and on those old streets you can watch it spread house to house.
