The Clinch comes out from under Melton Hill Dam cold enough to make its own fog, and on summer mornings that fog climbs the bank and sits in the yards along the river until the sun burns it off. Clinch River Lawn & Landscape is usually in it by then, mowing the bottomland where the grass grows thickest, edging the drives, trimming the banks the mower can't hold. River-bottom lawns are their own problem — soft ground, fast growth, a green that runs away from you in June — and the answer is simply being there on schedule. Late in the day, when the mist has gone and the light lies long across the water, the cut still holds its lines. That's the part worth the drive.
