Downtown Nashville is a walking city before it is anything else — Church Street, Fifth Avenue, the long stretches of sidewalk between the courthouse and the river. Block by Block clears those in winter: shoveling walks and crossings, chipping ice off curb ramps and doorways, salting the shaded north faces of buildings where the sun never reaches all day. The work happens in the hours when Broadway has finally gone quiet and the streetlights still own the pavement. By the time the buses run and the first coffee lines form, a person can cross an intersection without watching their feet. A city block cleared end to end is its own small piece of order.
