East Tennessee Soil Services

About East Tennessee Soil Services

The red clay under Middle Valley turns hard as fired brick in a February freeze, and whatever lands on top of it stays put. East Tennessee Soil Services works that stretch of the calendar — plowing and shoveling drives, opening walkways down to the surface, treating the ice that forms and re-forms wherever water runs across concrete. Cold here is damp and patient; it does not pack up just because the sun came out. A drive cleared at dawn hands a household its entire day back. The work is snow and ice removal, carried on until the ground finally lets go.
