About Carroll County TDOT

Highways 22 and 79 carry Carroll County to everywhere else, and in a winter storm they become the whole argument. The Carroll County TDOT operation at McKenzie turns out for exactly that, plowing state route pavement and treating it with salt and sand while the county sleeps. Snow in this part of Tennessee often starts as rain and finishes as glaze, which makes timing the craft — get ahead of it, stay ahead of it, then come back through again. Trucks run the same miles over and over in the dark, and the payoff is a black stripe of open road at first light. It is public work in the plainest sense: the way home, kept open.
