Caughron & Co

About Caughron & Co

The road toward Walland narrows as it goes, the shoulders drop away, and the weather up that way answers to the mountain rather than to town. Caughron & Co plows and salts through that country — drives cut into the slope above the Little River, turnarounds that have to be opened wide enough for a truck, walks scraped down to the surface. What falls as cold rain in Maryville can be four inches by the time the ground rises toward Townsend. So the trucks go out early and go out often, and the drives are clear when the sky finally goes gray over the mountain. The high country sets the hours; the work only keeps them.
