Up toward Happy Valley the lanes are shared — three or four houses strung along one gravel run, each of them waiting on the same stretch of ground to be passable. Blount Excavating Inc takes those in a single pass in the small hours, pushing the snow into the bank, back-blading the aprons, then salting the pitch where the lane meets the pavement. There is a satisfaction particular to the last house on a long drive: the headlights turn in, and the way is simply there. Ice reaches these hollows at a different hour than it reaches town, and the trucks roll accordingly. By breakfast the ridge is white and the road is not.
